The main attraction of Vavau is its secluded islands, meandering passages and protected bays for yachts. Vavau is one of the best spots in the Southern Hemisphere for watching humpback whales. These magnificent mammals visit the protected waters of Vavau from July to October to calf. The yachting season is another great attraction of Vavau and lasts from April to October. Even some of the larger islands in the group are uninhabited making this a great destination for exploring beaches. Vavau has the very best snorkelling spots in Tonga, notable Mala Passage and the Coral Gardens, Exotic fish, and brilliant corals lie just beneath the surface. Neiafu is a small town of about 6000 inhabitants set alongside a wonderful sheltered passage where yachts set anchor. Neiafu has some excellent waterfront restaurants and lively bars. Neiafu Town is the place to organize tours and activities and has lots of guesthouse accommodation and one large hotel. The Port of Refuge is one of the South Pacific's busiest sailing harbours in August, the height of the sailing season. Mount Talau can be climbed for great views over the harbour and islands. The cliffs along the western coast of Vavau are the main islands most unusual attractions. The main island of Vavau has few beaches, is flat and featureless and given over to coconut plantations. Kaloa Beach is one of the few sandy beaches on the main island of Vavau but thewre are plenty of beautiful islands in the myriad of islands offshore. The island of Pangaimotu is connected by land bridge to Vavau and has trails throughout making it easy to explore by foot or bicycle. Pangaimotu, like many of the islands, has a mysterious coastline with secluded beaches inaccessible by road. The myriad of tiny uplifted limestone islands make this a fantastic destination for sailing and boat cruises. The uplifted coral limestone islands like Kitu are riddled with small caves. The sandy beach on Lautala Island is a popular anchorage spot. Swallows Cave has some nice snorkelling and is a popular spot for day trippers. The southern islands of Vavau are mostly tiny circular coral islands. click below for a detailed travel guide Tonga Travel Guide |
