In 1777 Captain James Cook anchored here and ventured along the coast. The lagoon side of Nukualofa is not developed with just a few factories and residential streets further inland. The lagoon is a popular fishing spot for locals The Kings Palace on the seashore is a definite attraction of Nukualofa in a town where there is little else to see other than Malaekula, the Royal Tombs where royalty has been buried since 1893. Tonga is the only monarchy remaining in the Pacific. Saturday is market day - lots of root crops, fruit and handcrafts. The Womens Handcraft Centre in downtown Nukualofa is a great place to source traditional Tongan craft and fine mats. Tongans are extremely religious and Sunday is a strict day of rest - not even restaurants or taxis are open for business. The seawall looking east towards the harbour offers a small strip of grass with seating making it a popular place for locals to hang out at weekends. Several restaurants and small hotels can be found across the road with sea views. The beach west of Nukualofa Centre is coarse with broken coral and not particularly clean although a fresh sea breeze and views of the offshore islands make this a popular residential area. The beach east of Nukualofa Harbour is coarse and with broken coral but views of the offshore islands and a cool sea breeze make this a popular spot for an evening stroll. |
