Known as the friendly islands, Tonga is the last remaining Kingdom in the South Pacific and its people are extremely proud, traditional, and overall amongst the friendliest in the world. Here you'll find lots of secluded coral islands with palm fringed beaches and crystal clear lagoons, incredible limestone waterways ideal for sailing, kayaking, snorkelling and whale watching, and traditional villages with some significant archaeological sites. With four island groups and over 150 islands in all, a third of the country's 100,000 population live in the capital Nuku'alofa on the main island of Tongatapu. Sunday is a strict day of rest - no flights, no restaurants open and not even taxis to get to church - you'll have to walk! Luckily, the King allows tourists to go for day trips to the offshore islands so work your itinerary around this Haapai is a lovely collection of islands with a true South Seas atmosphere and only a few guesthouses with one small resort. The Vavau Group further north is the holiday gem with great sailing, snorkelling, island hopping and whale watching, with several resorts and hotels. Niuatoputapu is 240km north of Vavau and takes almost three hours by small plane from the main island of Tongatapu. There is only one flight a week and even this is not guaranteed. |
